Frequently Asked Questions

No, fasting is not necessary.

The screening requires a standard venous blood draw, similar to what a doctor orders during routine lab work. Only one tube is collected—about a teaspoon of blood.

No. This is a not a clinical research study.

Yes. If the customer chooses to add the Alzheimer’s Risk Biomarker Screening, the fee is $499.

No. Health insurance does not typically cover this screening, and it is not billed through insurance.

This screening will be done during your screening visit.

Results can be found in the LLS results portal. In addition, if your results show elevated levels of p-tau217 a copy will be mailed directly to you.

This test may help determine the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease within the next 10–20 years. It does not confirm whether a person will or will not develop Alzheimer’s disease. It provides an indication of risk based on detection of the p-tau217 biomarker.

Very few companies offer this blood test, and most require cognitive testing or existing symptoms before screening. Life Line Screening is one of the only organizations offering it without those requirements, allowing us to offer a complex test at a reasonable price.

Additionally, the lab analysis required for this test uses specialized technology that is more complex than typical bloodwork.

No. Dementia is a general term for symptoms such as memory loss, confusion, or behavioral changes. These symptoms can have many causes, such as Parkinson’s disease or Lewy Body disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is one specific cause of dementia and can be associated with abnormal amyloid and tau proteins in the brain.

A high result indicates that p-tau217 was detected at levels that may suggest ongoing changes or future changes in the brain. It does not confirm that the individual has Alzheimer’s disease.

There is no proven way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease. However, advancements in the field of brain health and prescribed medications have made major improvements in slowing the progression of the disease.

In addition, lifestyle habits—such as learning new skills, exercising, reading, maintaining healthy blood pressure, and following a healthy diet—may delay or reduce the severity of symptoms.

There are newly approved medications that can reduce the buildup of certain proteins in the brain and may significantly slow disease progression. Other medications can help manage symptoms. Advancements in medicine continue to occur so having this information can be helpful as further treatment options become available.

This is a preventative screening offering and not a diagnostic tool. It would not be appropriate for someone that has already been diagnosed.

At present, there are no established clinical guidelines that specify how often p-tau217 testing should be repeated. P-tau217 is not a standalone diagnostic test and should be interpreted within the context of the patient's clinical picture. Repeat testing decisions should also be made with clinical discretion including possibly when additional evaluation is warranted, symptoms progress, or more information becomes available.
